Meet your Pamlico County Farmer
The Pamlico Committee of 100, the Pamlico Soil and Water Conservation District and Pamlico County, has entered into a partnership to promote agriculture. For Pamlico County, agriculture includes farming, fishing and forestry. Check out a preview of the filming that is underway.
ROWING
The Pamlico County Committee of 100 was successful in its efforts to bring the University of North Carolina Women’s Rowing Team to the region for its spring training session in 2008. Coaches and team members resided at Camp Vandemere, a 46-acre, faith-based recreation facility on the Bay River in the town of Vandemere.
Rowers spent a week practicing their skills and techniques in several protected creeks, depending on wind direction.
FORUM
Laying the ground work for political involvement, the Pamlico County Committee of 100, in conjunction with The County Compass newspaper, sponsored and promoted political forums for the 2008 and 2010 election cycles. Candidates running for contested positions were invited to answer questions submitted by county residents. These forums have been well attended and proved helpful to voters. The plan is to continue these forums for each election cycle with the possibility of endorsing those who meet criteria of business experience and/or knowledge who will work to encourage business development.
BOAT SHOW
The Pamlico County Committee of 100 works with local organizations and event planners to bring tourists into the county. The Committee sponsored the second annual boat show in spring, 2010 and has turned over the reins to a local non-profit civic organization for future years. The Committee continues to seek out events to support and become involved with.
MILITARY TASK FORCE LUNCHEON
The Committee responded favorably to a request made by local government to sponsor a luncheon for the Military Growth Task Force. It was promoted and very well attended. Mark Sutherland, Executive Director of the MGTF, gave an extensive report on the challenges facing Eastern North Carolina with the expansion of military bases. Health care, roads and other infrastructure, as well as the new “Feed the force, fuel the force” initiative were presented. While these challenges seem to be large, the military is committed to helping counties meet these goals. Sutherland included comments about ways counties might help the military and many mutual interests which could aid in forming a sound partnership for all concerned were identified.
