Stonewall

Incorporated in 1870, Stonewall is home to the County’s first post office and is the original site of the county courthouse before it was moved to Bayboro.

Residents wanted the town to be named Jackson to honor a local mill owner, but the name was already taken in North Carolina. Stonewall was selected, presumably coined to honor Confederate General T. J. “Stonewall” Jackson.

Stonewall borders the Bay River at Highway 55 near the Pamlico County Middle School campus.
