In May, 2008, the Pamlico County Committee of 100 hosted a joint meeting with town mayors to discuss how they might work together to solve common issues and build coalitions and partnerships utilizing local opportunities and resources. A Mayors Association, slated to be the foundation for a political—business group in the county, evolved as a result of this initial gathering.
As a result of a meeting for the mayors of the County’s nine townships, hosted by the Pamlico County Committee of 100, an Association of Municipalities was formed. The inaugural meeting was held May, 2008 with guest speakers representing the North Carolina Eastern Region and the Eastern Carolina Council (ECC).
Emphasis was placed on working together to develop a coordinated strategy and mobilizing leaders to:
- Build a better economic base in the County
- Promote business and create better paying jobs
- Increase the tax base
- Help improve basic infrastructure
- Leverage funding and incentives from state, federal and private sources
